History & Cultural Notes

Georgia's 762 is not a territory of its own but an overlay, laid over area code 706 across a horseshoe-shaped swath of northern and west-central Georgia that wraps around metro Atlanta in three geographically disconnected pieces. That base code, 706, had split off from 404 back in 1992; NANPA assigned 762 on June 24, 2005 after the Georgia PSC found 706 running short of new central office prefixes, and permissive dialing under the overlay began September 3, 2005, with ten-digit dialing made mandatory across the combined area on April 1, 2007.

The 706/762 region ties together Fort Benning near Columbus, Fort Gordon and the Army Cyber Center of Excellence near Augusta, and the University of Georgia in Athens -- itself a formative music scene for R.E.M. and the B-52's. Augusta National Golf Club hosts the Masters every April, and Dalton has long billed itself the "Carpet Capital of the World," producing most of the country's carpet.

Beyond Columbus and Augusta, the numbering plan area also reaches Rome, Dalton, LaGrange, Toccoa, Dahlonega, Calhoun, and Cornelia, spanning an economy built on military installations, textiles, higher education, and manufacturing.
