236 Area Code – Vancouver, British Columbia: Location, Time Zone & History

British Columbia's numbering plan took an unusual turn in 2013 when regulators chose to relieve pressure on the province's existing area codes without carving up territory into new geographic zones. The CRTC's Telecom Decision 2011-451 approved a new code after 604, 250 and 778 were projected to run out of available numbers by 2016. Rather than splitting the map, the commission layered 236 on top of the entire province as an overlay, put into service on June 1, 2013. Because ten-digit dialing had already been mandatory across British Columbia since 2008, callers noticed no disruption in how they reached a Vancouver or Victoria number.

That overlay approach proved durable but not permanent. Renewed exhaustion pressure led to a further overlay, area code 672, added in 2019 across the same 604/250/778/236 territory, and a fifth code, 257, followed in 2025. Together these codes now share identical geographic reach, meaning a 236 number carries no information about which part of the province a caller is dialing into, from Kamloops to Nanaimo.
