Vancouver anchors a British Columbia numbering complex so large that a caller's area code says nothing about where in the province they actually are. Area code 672 was activated May 4, 2019 as a third overlay layered on top of 604, 250, and 778, ordered by the CRTC to head off exhaustion of the existing codes, which was projected for May 2020. It followed 236, put into service in 2013 as the province's first distributed overlay, and it was itself followed by 257, introduced May 24, 2025 as a fourth layer of relief.
Unlike a geographic split, 672 has no exclusive territory of its own; every number issued under it can be assigned anywhere across British Columbia alongside numbers from the other four codes in the same complex. That reach extends to Victoria, Kelowna, Kamloops, Surrey, and Nanaimo, and even to the small Alaskan community of Hyder, Alaska, which is reachable only by road through Canada and is served by the same BC overlay codes.
