Few area codes have expanded as steadily as 778, British Columbia's first overlay. It began narrowly, entering service November 3, 2001 as a concentrated overlay for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley on top of 604 alone. Less than six years later, on July 4, 2007, the CRTC broadened it into a province-wide overlay layered across both 604 and 250, and mandatory ten-digit dialing followed across all of British Columbia the next year.
778 has since been joined by three further province-wide overlays -- 236 in 2013, 672 in 2019, and 257 in 2025 -- each adding capacity without redrawing any boundary. Because it carries no exclusive territory of its own, 778's population is simply the province's: just over five million per the 2021 census.
