The territory it covers traces back to 1957, when area code 819 was carved out of the original province-wide 514 in a flash-cut split covering central and western Quebec. Decades later, a CRTC order dated July 20, 2011 moved up the introduction of 873 after forecasts showed 819 would run out of numbers sooner than planned, and the new overlay entered service on September 15, 2012.
